Every year, Independence Day pops up shortly before the Fourth of July and becomes the holiday’s equivalent of what Die Hard is to Christmas. I notice it slowly, as friends start saying things like, “We will not go quietly into the night,” even though I’m just asking for their Taco Bell order. But it makes sense. The president’s speech in that movie is all-time quotable.
However, if you consider it within the borders of the film’s own fictional world, President Whitmore had it easy, because he gave that rousing speech in a time before social media, online contrarian think-pieces, and whatever the hell half of TV journalism has devolved into. So here’s what it would actually be like today. Cue the chorus of UGGGGGGGGGGH.
