Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffet is sending Sherlock and Watson back to the 19th century! In an interview with EW, the Doctor Who helmsman confirmed what fans had been speculating since early last month when set pictures of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in Victorian garb went viral.
The episode will take place in an alternate universe as a standalone Christmas special, not connected to the three episode run of season 4. Here’s what Moffat told EW about it:
“We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it — as we could hardly conceal — it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
So now we finally get to see Sherlock be the original Sherlock! If the thought of that doesn’t make you smile, nothing will.
