“League of Legends” is a multiplayer online battle arena video game that has gotten wildly popular in the last year.

How popular?

More popular than sports!

“League of Legends held a world championship this year from September to October. In that time, about 27 million people watched the event, according to Riot Games.

Compare this with the 23.5 million people who watched Game 7 of this year’s World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals. The series averaged 13.8 million per game.

Compare it also with the 18 million people who watched the deciding Game 5 of the NBA Finals, when the San Antonio Spurs beat the Miami Heat. That series averaged 15.5 million per game.

It should be noted, however, that the “League of Legends” viewership number is the total for people who watched over the month-long championship campaign. The peak for people watching at one time was 11.2 million, compared with 27.8 million in the final inning of World Series Game 7, according to ESPN.
