These ‘Sexy’ Commercials Really Fail At Being Sexy

It’s tried, tested and true; SEX SELLS. This is essentially the very first rule of advertising. Trying to sell something? Just slap some boobs behind it and watch the money roll in. Sometimes, however, when the product being promoted isn’t exactly as “sexy” as the model trying to sell it, things can get a bit awkward.

For example, the hands-down leader in sex appeal commercials is Carl’s Jr. That’s right, the greasy, fattening, hamburger joint specializes in smoking hot babes. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but seeing an 11/10 in a bikini doesn’t exactly make me want to stuff my face with bacon and cheese. Then again, I’ll most certainly watch their ads over and over.

This trend all started with Paris Hilton, who enjoyed a quality burger while wearing a bathing suit on top of a luxury automobile. You know, the kind of stuff we all do on a daily basis:

Kate Upton’s big break got started with her commercial for Carl’s JR:

They acquired the services of one of TIME’s most influential people, Kim Kardashian:

Then, somebody in marketing had the best idea ever; hire Emily Ratajkowski AND Sara Underwood:

Finally, at this year’s Super Bowl, they introduced us to the Internet’s newest IT-girl; Charlotte McKinney:

Carl’s JR isn’t the only one trying to use hot celebs to sell their product. Check out this spot for SHEBA Cat Food starring Eva Longoria:

Sometimes, companies prefer to use some not-so-subtle sexual innuendos instead of hiring a big name star. Check out this raunchy one from Skittles:

Liquid Plumr tried the same strategy:

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to be sexy, the product itself just can’t be. For example, check out this attempt to make a hot commercial for fertilizer:

Finally, every once in a while you just get a perfect storm of NOPE, like this ad for Lindner Coffins. The product can’t be sexy, the video is questionable at best, and the overall finished product is cringe-worthy:
