In film, mirrors are used to dramatize moments of peaking emotional instability. It encourages vulnerability in a character: before your eyes—and their own—they reflect on the mistakes of the past and the daunting nervous wreck that is the future. However, as Fandor’s Keyframe team recently pointed out, male and female characters handle such trying times with vastly different reactions of faltering inner strength. Basically, men smash the mirror and women cry in front of it. If a million examples aren’t already rushing to your head, watch the video above for movie character after movie character playing along some extremely gender lines.
