Mother!, a film by director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), “Centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.”
While this premise sounds simultaneously intriguing and terrifying, it’s all the information we’ve gotten about the film since word first spread of the project in late 2015. On Mother’s Day, however, Aronofsky strategically released an illustrated poster for the psychological horror on Twitter along with the caption, “HAPPY Mother day!”.
As you can see, things look…well, they look creepy. Lawrence is literally handing her bloody heart over to somebody (or something) looming behind the camera. She doesn’t look too happy about it either.
The setting–a botanical garden? The backdrop to Crazy Town’s “Butterfly”?–doesn’t offer much insight, either. What the post does reveal, however, is that Lawrence will be in good company. Javier Bardem has been cast as Lawrence’s husband, though Lawrence and Aronofsky were clearly the two canoodling on on set.
Further inspection–shoutout to IMDB!–reveals Michelle Pfieffer will play a lead role in the film as well. Many speculate she will play the namesake “mother” and is actually the ominous figure Lawrence is offering her heart to in the poster. If Pfieffer’s stellar acting chops weren’t enought to get you excited about the film, other notable cast members include a veritable mix of talent with the likes of Ed Harris, Kristen Wiig and Domhall Gleeson.
Hopefully Aronofsky drops some more clues before its release on October 13, like why Lawrence is still alive and well, despite the fact that she’s cut her own heart out of her body and is bleeding profusely.
