British actress Naomi Scott plays Kimberly Hart, a.k.a. the Pink Ranger, in the new Power Rangers movie, and she’s excited to take on the role of a superhero. If Scott, 23, looks familiar, it’s probably because she played Maddy Shannon in the short-lived Fox sci-fi series Terra Nova a few years back. She also had a small part in The Martian, but this is her first leading role in a feature film. She told Metro that she’s influenced by Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Rachel Weisz. “These women do such good work, and do so unapologetically. They don’t even have to talk about being strong. They just do what they do, and the work speaks for itself. That’s what I look to do.”

In an interview with W magazine, Scott said it’s important to her that her characters actually have something to say. She asks herself, “Why is this female here? Is she just here to be female, to look pretty, or there to make the guy funny?”

In the Power Rangers movie, which hits theaters Friday, 3/24, she found an opportunity to be a strong role model. While she doesn’t remember watching the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show as a kid, she and her brother would pretend to be Power Rangers for fun. She told Teen Vogue, “When I was growing up, probably part of the reason I played Power Rangers was the fact there was a girl in it. Hopefully for girls now, it won’t have to be a conversation. It’s just like, ‘Yeah, cool. I can be a superhero.’ It’s about all of us, and it’s not about gender, so hopefully that’s the message the movie portrays.”
