After introducing four of the lesser-known Marvel superheroes to binge-watchers around the world, Netflix and Marvel’s prolific partnership has all come down to this. On August 18, the Marvel Netflix universe will reach its nadir with The Defenders, the long-awaited limited series in which Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) join forces to save New York City from Sigourney Weaver and her army of undead ninjas.
In the first full-length trailer, we get a glimpse of how these flawed, crosstown rivals put their differences (and egos) aside to form a kind of Avengers-lite. Jessica Jones needs legal help and what do you know? In walks Mr. Right-Place-at-the-Right-Time Matt Murdock to offer his services.
Meanwhile, a street fight between Luke Cage and Iron Fist clue them in that neither one is your average latte-swilling New Yorker. Eventually, we see the new allies chowing down over Chinese food and beating up faceless baddies in hallways (because what would a Netflix Marvel series be withot some very cool fights in some very narrow hallways).
But dizzying action set pieces aren’t the only thing retruning for Netflix’s superhero blowout. Scott Glenn is back as the blnd martial arts guru Stick and Elodie Yung is returns as the elusive femme fatale Elektra. While both characters have had their morally ambiguous moments, Stick looks to have sided with the good guys, while Elektra has chosen the path of darkness.
That path leads directly to Sigourney Weaver, whose mysterious arch-villain Alexandra seems to have no noticeable super powers, unless you count that bone-chilling grin. Hey, works for us.
