What’s Coming and Going From Netflix in October

What’s Coming and Going From Netflix in October: Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained

Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained

Bad news, Netflix fans: come October 1, your ability to binge Battlestar Galactica will be severely hampered by the fact that the series won’t be on the service anymore. Same with Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent — although, let’s be honest, no-one really wants to binge Criminal Intent anyway. On the plus side, all of that clears the way for that Hart of Dixie Season 3 re-watch that you’ve always wanted to do.

There really is a whole lot of classic material disappearing from Netflix’s Watch Instantly service in October; in addition to the TV shows mentioned above, there’s also classic movies including Don’t Look Now, Death Wish, The African Queen and both Ghostbusters movies. More recent movies gone by October 1 include Mean Girls and the first Hunger Games. (There’s a full list of the newcomers and the vanished below.)

Don’t lose heart, however; the new arrivals on the service throughout the month more than make up for any losses (There’s even the arrival of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on the 22nd, as a direct replacement for the first movie). If the divorce drama of Kramer vs. Kramer doesn’t appeal to your romantic side, you can always watch Sleepless in Seattle or Romeo + Juliet (all arriving October 1). Perhaps you’d prefer the story of a man whose penis has detached itself and becomes a fully-grown human (Bad Johnson, also arriving October 1), or the chance to watch Arrow season 2 again (October 8).

If you’re finding yourself pressed for time — or simply just unable to choose from what’s going to show up on Watch Instantly over the next 31 days — then here are some picks of the best of the new bunch:

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Series

If you don’t know why this show’s on the list, clearly you didn’t catch it during its initial run on the WB/CW from 2000 through 2007. Between Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop’s performances, Amy Sherman-Palladino’s sharp, hilarious dialogue and the teen drama of Alexis Bledel and her many romances, this is pretty much the West Wing of soap operas, and some of the best network television of the last 10 years or so. Plus, Melissa McCarthy, years before she became Melissa McCarthy. (October 1)

Galaxy Quest

Arguably the greatest Star Trek movie ever made, and with a cast that’s worth paying attention to (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shaloub, Sam Rockwell and Alan Rickman play the leads). In some alternate world, J.J. Abrams rebooted this franchise, and we were all better off for it. (October 1)

Team America: World Police

The parody — performed by marionettes, because why not? — from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone isn’t just savagely funny when it comes to the action movies it swipes its plot structure from. As the title suggests, it’s also a satire on American foreign policy of the era immediately following 9/11, as well as the way in which the country saw itself at the time. That it still stands up — and feels so contemporary — today is either a testament to the movie’s quality or a sad statement on how little has changed in the last decade. Let’s hope it’s the former. (October 1)

Wyatt Cenac: Brooklyn

The former Daily Show reporter gets his second full-length special, recorded at Union Hall in Brooklyn. The video above shows the production — well, kind of — of the accompanying vinyl album of the set, released on the same day as the special debuts on Netflix. (October 21)

Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino’s first Western revenge fantasy (he’s already at work on the second, The Hateful Eight) arrives on Netflix, meaning that it’s all so much easier to just watch it over and over again in an attempt to get all the dialogue down exactly right. The dubious racial politics might become more difficult to ignore on multiple viewings, of course…
