*“It seemed like a matter of minutes when we began rolling in the foothills before Oakland and suddenly reached a height and saw stretched out ahead of us the fabulous white city of San Francisco on her eleven mystic hills with the blue Pacific and its advancing wall of potato-patch fog beyond, and smoke and goldenness in the late afternoon of time.” *– Jack Kerouac

Birthplace of the beatniks and hometown of U.S. liberal activists, San Francisco is one of the best places in the US for tourists to visit. The average vacationer will take a walk through the famed Haight-Ashbury district, spend an afternoon at the Fisherman’s Wharf and laze their day away at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, but we know you want to enjoy an authentic night out in San Francisco and we have just the places to send you.

Located in the fabled North Beach neighborhood, Portland, Oregon based brewery Rogue Ale set up shop back in 2003 and have been serving up their popular ales to SF beer guzzlers ever since. With 40 brews on tap and a reasonably priced menu of pub grub, the Rogue Ale Public House makes a great safe haven for beer lovers who do not want to be bothered by irksome, camera happy tourists. If you’re not familiar with Rogue Ale, we suggest starting off with their three time award winning German Maibock style beer called Dead Guy Ale or asking the bartenders for their favorite flavored pint.

Uncorking only the most thoroughly researched, tested and tasted natural wines, Terroir is a must go for any wine lover. Made with grapes with minimal chemical and technological intervention during growth, natural wine is one of the most interesting and complex tastes and crafts emerging from the wine industry. Don’t feel bad if you end up spending your dinner money on glass after glass, tastings at Terroir can get a little heated between patrons who have dissimilar palate.

To soak up the beer and wine you’ve been drinking, you will have**to indulge in the specialty pasta and pizza served up at flour + water. Nominated as the best new restaurant in 2010 as well as the Rising Star Chef award in 2011, flour + water is aiming to bring handmade pasta and pizza back to its simplistic, sophisticated roots. Each day the menu includes up to eight kinds of freshly made pasta as well as their unrivaled thin crust Italian wood fired oven baked pizza. We hope that you’re going with a large table, it’s impossible to only pick one dish from their menu.

11 P.M. The Royal Cuckoo

Equipped with a record library, a rather extensive collection of stuffed animal heads and an electric organist, The Royal Cuckoo is the quirky kind of San Francisco bar tourists’ dream of. Owner Paul Miller decorated by moving in all of his possessions and instead of splurging on a jukebox, hauled in his own record collection (estimated in the thousands). Miller catalogued the entire library by index cards for patrons and bartenders to create the perfect eclectic ambiance for the night. Serving up delicious house-invented cocktails, a good selection of beer on tap and by the bottle, it’s no wonder this bar is packed with locals during the weekends.

1 A.M. Trad'r Sam

We believe that this prominent nightlife fixture of San Francisco has to be experienced by everyone at least once. If you’re certain you can handle your alcohol, grab your group of friends and split on a couple of Trad’r Sam scorpion bowls. They are weird and they are strong but they are delicious, so don’t be surprised if you end up hula dancing out of the bar instead of walking.

??? Grubstake

It may have been spotlighted on the popular television show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, but this 24 hour restaurant has been famously serving up San Francisco’s favorite late night diner food since 1967. Taking pride in its delicious pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, family style dining and continental Portuguese cuisine, Grubstake is a place that is worth the wait while you’re sobering up in the wee hours of the morning.
