The Next ‘Destiny’ Game Might Have Writing that Doesn’t Suck

The Next ‘Destiny’ Game Might Have Writing that Doesn’t Suck:

Destiny is getting some new writing chops in the “has experience with gun-toting space superhero stories” department.

Joining the team at Bungie as lead writer is Chris Schlerf—formerly the lead writer on BioWare’s fourth game in the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect: Andromeda. Schlerf announced on Twitter he was no longer working on BioWare’s game about a space marine and his or her pals who fly around space fighting aliens, and was instead joining Bungie to work on their game about space wizards and their pals who fly around space fighting aliens.

Before he was at BioWare, Scherlf worked at 343 Industries on Halo 4—a game about a space marine (but not really any of his pals) fighting aliens. While Halo 4 wasn’t exactly lauded for its story, mostly because it required reading a bunch of supplementary novels and such to understand what was going on, the Mass Effect series has consistently been reliant on solid dialogue and story ideas (even if the ending of Mass Effect 3 was basically a pile of slapdash garbage—the rest was great). Schlerf didn’t work on the previous Mass Effect games, but given the series’ history, he definitely had big shoes to fill and possibly the writer-feet to fill them.

Given that Destiny is full of cool story lore that’s, uh, not actually in the game, hopefully Bungie is looking to apply more writing talent to its upcoming expansion and next year’s Destiny sequel.
