One of Nintendo’s Biggest Games is Getting Slightly Gayer

One of Nintendo’s Biggest Games is Getting Slightly Gayer:

No, Mario and Luigi aren’t finally going to admit that they aren’t actually brothers (unfortunately). But certain Fire Emblem Fates characters will be able to enter into same sex romantic relationships when the game hits the Nintendo 3DS in 2016.

Which characters depends on the version of the game you buy, Nintendo confirmed to Polygon, explaining that there are two editions of Fire Emblem Fates, each with a different potential same-sex relationship. If the player character is male and they want a relationship with another man, they’ll need the “Conquest” edition of the game; with a female player character and a woman, it’s the “Birthright” edition. There’s only one character in each edition that’ll commit to a same-sex relationship, though, so you’ll need to know what you’re hoping for before you buy, and choose your own character’s gender appropriately.

This is a pretty big step for Nintendo, which hasn’t always been too receptive to the idea of same-sex relationships in its games. It was most notable around Tomodachi Life, a quirky life simulation game that featured only heterosexual relationships, causing a bit of a stir last year. Many players were left to assume gay people weren’t quite “whimsical” enough for Nintendo—based on the company’s own statements—and they were, understandably, pretty upset that the “life simulator” title refused to reflect the lives they wanted to simulate.

Fire Emblem Fates doesn’t seem like it’ll be breaking any records for inclusiveness, what with exactly one gay person appearing in each edition of the game, but hey—it’s certainly a step.
