Anyone who’s ever had casual sex or a one-night stand knows those encounters rarely end up being as casual as their names imply. Even if you and your partner agree to keep things commitment-free, no strings attached, you have need to follow some pretty strict guidelines to avoid catching feels or accidentally tripping into a relationship—or at least, making your partner think you’re in one.
That truth is at odds with another universal truth about sex, however. That is, most people preempt sex with a meal. Flings, one-night stands and casual sex can get tricky once you involve food. Hear us out.
A new study of 2,000 single millennials, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Yelp, recently looked at how your eating habits can affect a fling. Some of the data is unsurprising, like the fact that only 35 percent of survey respondents think it’s acceptable to go out to dinner with a one-night stand. Everyone else agreed that going out to dinner post-sex turns the encounter into an legitimate date.
If you’re both hungry afterward (points if it’s because the sex was so good, it wore you both out), consider doing takeout or UberEats, as one in three people think it’s perfectly okay to eat with a hookup when it doesn’t require sitting down in a restaurant. Not to mention, Postmates makes it possible to eat naked, in case things get physical again mid-meal. And get this: you’re more likely to go at it again if you order pizza between sex sessions.
According to Yelp, pizza is the perfect food to eat during a one-night stand, as determined by almost 80 percent of people surveyed. Pizza also topped the list of foods that make a person seem more attractive. Tacos came in second with 40 percent of the vote as the perfect post-coital comida.
In third place, respondents said they’d be attracted to a person eating wings, which confirms the results of an earlier survey by the dating app Hinge that named fried chicken as the best food to order on a first date. It makes sense if you think about it: someone who’s willing to get into messy, greasy food in front of a person they just met would probably be similarly uninhibited in bed.
Yelp’s survey also included information about habits that gross people out. While only one in five respondents said they’d turn down a date with someone over his or her eating habits, the survey identified several habits as particularly unappealing. Women are most disgusted by how their dates chew, with more than half saying they’re turned off by dates who chew loudly or with their mouths open. The biggest turn-off for guys is a date who eats a lot of junk food; 56 percent of the men surveyed considered that a dealbreaker.
This information might’ve been intended as a guide to how not to eat on a date, but it could also come in handy if you want to cool off things with a fling who’s starting to get too attached. When you’ve bitten off more than you can chew in a romantic sense, there’s an easy fix: Take a big bite of the nearest food, open your mouth and chew.
