Hypothetically, I like sports—or to clarify, I like hypothetical sports, like monkey-motocross knife-fighting and Death Star parkour. Here and there, though, a notable athlete gets me to turn my head to the real stuff, so naturally my head exploded when I found out that golfer Paige Spiranac existed.
But then I learned about all the bogus controversy surrounding her! See, when Spiranac joined the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, all this bunk criticism popped up because there’s a slight chance—more like 110%—she looks like femme fatale from Heaven.
Some people have alleged that the only reason Paige was invited to compete in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters was because of her popular Instagram feed. They say that her play on the course doesn’t warrant her invitation, and that the tournament is trying to capitalize on her social numbers. And since no one’s heard of this tournament before now, we think that’s probably a good thing for them.
After all the criticism, Paige shot a 77 and finished 94th out of 108 golfers in the first round of the tournament. Afterwards she was asked about her opinion of the criticism. Here’s her response:
“I understand where they are coming from. I mean, I’ve played golf and have had good results, but when you look at my game compared to the top players in the world, I’m not in the same league.”
“But I wish they could see that I’m working as hard as I can. I may make it, I may not make it. But I’m just trying to focus on what I need to do to get to the next level and trying not to focus on what they say.”
Paige says she’s still grateful to all her fans and credits her social media with helping her get to where she is. She still hopes to earn her way into the LPGA and says she’s still on track to do so.
Does it really matter if she looks amazing on and off the field (which she totally, absolutely does)?
