Sweden's Peter, Bjorn and John are back for the first time since "Young Folks"—a song with arguably the greatest whistling solo this side of Focus’ "Hocus Pocus"—blasted them into the mainstream three years ago. Living Thing doesn’t offer any up anything quite that addictive, though it's plenty cute, with percolating, minimal beats and charmingly wrong ESL lyrics at the fore, alternating between sounding like twee goof and millennial dread destined for the disco. They’ve eschewed the remnants of rock and stripped the songs down to their plastic ’80s marrow—often simply using an off-kilter croon, handclaps and synth blips—very much recalling the work of flashback faves Flock of Seagulls. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn’t stand up to the single “Nothing to Worry About”: The track's vague ethno-beat, overdriven kid-chorus and casual disses ensure its rightful place as a summer dance floor staple.
