It was a bit of a slow week in the world of music headlines. Unfortunately the biggest news was also the saddest as Ben E. King, soul singer best known for the classic “Stand By Me” passed away.
Now that you’re feeling tender, let’s get to the good news…
If you’ve been keeping track of our weekly playlists, you’re well aware that we’re pretty stoked on Tame Impala’s upcoming LP Currents. And this week the Australian psych rock outfit administered our third sample-sized dosage of the album with a starry-eyed glide through the clouds entitled “Disciples.”
On Tuesday night David Letterman gushed over Samuel T. Herring’s two-step when Baltimore’s Future Islands made their triumphant return to The Late Show stage to perform “The Chase”. The following day, the group released an additional piece of their double A-sided 7-inch single entitled “Haunted By You”.
Later this month, Ceremony will release The L-Shaped Man, which will be their first LP since 2012’s highly acclaimed Zoo. After revealing their sonic divergence from their hardcore and punk past in “The Separation” and “The Understanding,” the group gave us another taste of their newfound, brooding post-punk sound in “Your Life In France.”
The L-Shaped Man is due out May 19th via Matador.
In support of photographer Danny Clinch’s Kickstarter campaign to produce a documentary about Blind Melon’s late frontman Shannon Hoon, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Seth Avett (The Avett Brothers), and Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) all shared covers of the band’s tunes. We couldn’t choose a favorite, so here’s the bulk of ‘em. The Kickstarter campaign ends next Tuesday, and you can donate here if you feel so inclined.
