It was an interesting week in the music world, with headlines focused on the ongoing Streaming Wars. While Spotify announced its plans to build a video streaming service, Jay Z’s own video platform, Tidal, received its first big boost from his honey Beyonce’s new music video. One of Tidal’s many celebrity co-owners, Jack White, responded to critics with some pretty broad and misleading promises.
But luckily for us, the week offered more than snoozy industry jargon and Beyonce’s incessant claims that she’s feelin’ herself. We were very fortunate to hear these five new tunes…
We were already stoked on the upcoming Poltergeist remake (because Sam Rockwell, duh), but this new track released off the film’s accompanying soundtrack sent us into fanboy overload. To go along with the 80s time period of the original flick, Spoon recharged The Cramps’ 1980 rockabilly romper “TV Set.” Britt Daniel does a hell of a job meeting Lux Interior’s ominous and spastic coo.
Where at a Death Cab concert, you’ll find faces covered in tears, the faces at a Dan Deacon show will be smeared with neon paint. But this unexpected remix smushed both face-types together for an initially awkward, but ultimately smooth make out sesh.
Over the past several decades, we’ve heard countless husband-and-wife duos. But few have harmonized as genuinely as the criminally underrated Mates of State. Earlier this week, Stereogum premiered the second single off Kori Gardener and Jason Hammel’s forthcoming EP You’re Going to Make It. Listen to “Beautiful Kids” and just accept the warm and fuzzy butterflies that come with it. And if you’re embarking on a Memorial Day road trip, you should probably stock up on some Mates of States classics. We strongly suggest My Solo Project.
You’re Going to Make It is due out June 16th via Barsuk Records.
Okay, so it’s not new, but they did add two-minutes to span the entirety of David Letterman’s incredible Late Show farewell montage. Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t cry…
This is terrible. Have a great holiday weekend!
