If you’ve ever wondered if the skills of card sharks and poker mavericks would translate to the complex world of collectible card games, you might have an answer this weekend.
Blizzard Entertainment, the developer behind the digital card game Hearthstone, announced on its blog it’s pitting two non-Hearthstone players against each other this weekend at the yearly BlizzCon fan convention. Between tournaments featuring some of the best competitors in the game, poker pros Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier are going to see if the abilities to bluff, calculate odds and read opponents are going to be useful in a game that’s all about magic spells and monster battles.
Folks who follow the world of pro poker will recognize the name Negreanu—he’s the winningest tournament player in the game, and has taken down six World Series of Poker bracelets (the award for winning a WSOP event), and two World Poker Tour championship titles. Grospellier has an impressive record as well: he was a professional player of Blizzard’s sci-fi strategy game StarCraft and one of the top ranked in the world before becoming a pro poker player. He has one WSOP bracelet win, as well as titles from the European Poker Tour and World Poker Tour—the “Triple Crown” of wins.
You can watch Negreanu and Grospellier go after each other with their poker skills at 5:45 p.m. Friday on the Hearthstone Twitch channel.
