Quentin Tarantino has a genius for creating characters — not just in the sense that he creates great ones, but also in the sense that he creates so many different kinds. Sprinkled over his seven-and-a-quarter films are action heroes (not including The Hateful Eight, for now anyway), caricatures and, despite his reputation, naturalistic portraits. He has great lead parts, but he also has wonderful bit players — and less-than-bit players. There are even great Tarantino characters who just get talked about but never appear on screen.
In compiling this list, my goal was to give due consideration to the full range of Tarantino’s casts, from Ordell to poor Emilio the Goldfish. You won’t find an entry for every single named character on the IMDB cast list, but I have tried to include, one way or another, every character who registers as more than scenery (and some who are just scenery as well.)
The list is ranked from the worst character, through bland non-entities, to the best of the best. I have only included films Tarantino directed: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Four Rooms, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill 1, Kill Bill 2, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.
Without further ado, here is the list — so thorough that we had to break it into four parts. You can start screaming in rage and cursing my name with inventive profanities… now.
