Women who engage in flirtatious or romantic behavior with you may be indicating a higher level of wanting to do sexual things with you than they care to admit.

Seriously. New research published in Psychological Science asserts that “women understate their sexual intentions,” and “men’s assessments of women’s sexual intentions are generally accurate.”

Basically, this research indicates that what your general man intuits re: what a woman wants based on her flirtatious behavior is more accurate than we previously thought. This goes against popular wisdom and scientific research dating back decades maintaining that men tend to badly misinterpret signals from women.

An example: imagine that a woman is flirting pretty hard with you. You may tend to think of that as, “Oh my god she wants to take me home. I’M GETTI’N LAID TONIGHT, BOYS.” And you may be correct! But the woman—according to this new research—is likely to tell people that she was just being friendly and affectionate, even if she really wanted to jump your bones.

“Perhaps women are underreporting because they themselves are unaware of their true intentions, or because they are using self-reports to control the way they are perceived by other people,” the study reads, according to Pacific Standard.

The research does not claim to be definitive, however. So I wouldn’t recommend telling women that science says her behavior is more indicative of how into you she is than she actually is. That’s probably a horrible move.
