In the fifth and final season of the A&E series Bates Motel, the show has introduced a familiar character: Marion Crane. Crane, played by Janet Leigh in the 1960 movie Psycho, met her doom in the movie’s infamous shower scene, as we probably all know. This time around, Crane is played by Rihanna, and on last night’s episode, she stepped into the shower hoping for a little relaxation. (If you haven’t seen it yet, the full episode is currently free on A&E’s Bates Motel website.)
How’d they get Rihanna to check in to Bates Motel? Back in October 2015, she mentioned in a Vanity Fair interview that she likes the show. The show’s creators, Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, had been trying to reimagine the character of Marion Crane for the TV version. When they saw the Rihanna interview, they told Vulture that they reached out, expecting her to say no—but instead, she agreed to be involved. Cuse said, “Rihanna really embraced our idea of redefining the character. That was the moment in which she said I’m all-in.”
Rihanna made her debut on last week’s episode, “Dreams Die First.” During the premiere, she shared an Instagram Live stream as she watched the show with friends, and got totally embarrassed during the sex scene.
She didn’t share a live video during this week’s episode, and so far, there’s no word on what she thought of her big shower scene. Bates Motel comes to an end in April. There are four episodes left.
