Right on the heels of Star Wars: The Force Awakens appearing last week on streaming and this week on disc comes the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first standalone film set in the Star Wars universe.
Rogue One is a prequel of sorts. The opening crawl of the original 1977 Star Wars film says includes the line: “Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.” Rogue One is about those rebel spies. It will be in theaters in December.
(Sorry fanboys, this is not the Han Solo standalone film. That one doesn’t even have a Han Solo yet and won’t arrive in theaters until 2018.)
A few highlights from the trailer:
Felicity Jones, an Oscar nominee for The Theory of Everything, is in nearly every shot; she appears to be one of the rebel spies.
The Death Star you know and love is under construction.
Imperial Storm Troopers appear to have captured a handful of Rebel fighter pilots.
And At-ats—those lumbering metal beasts featured prominently in the original Star Wars trilogy but not in The Force Awakens—make an appearance here.
