Last night, Deadline Hollywood announced that Rosie Perez will be joining conservative political commentator Nicolle Wallace as a new host on The View. Believe it or not, there was a time when Perez’s voice was considered by some to be, if not grating, than, at least, an acquired taste. Those individuals will be happy to hear that the Do the Right Thing star’s distinct accent and high pitch have mellowed considerably since she first rose to fame.

In the ‘90s, Perez was a frequent guest of David Letterman who delighted in Rosie the raconteur while barely concealing his — shall we say — late-night longing. During her visits, Perez was a trooper and brushed off his unabashed gaze and intrusive personal questions with a wily, sense of humor. For those of us who, like Letterman, have always found Rosie riveting in all aspects, today, we remember her squeaky start fondly with these adorable, early interviews.

“If I see him, I’m going to kill him. I’m going to punch him in his face.”

“They can’t wave artillerary weapons on the stage.”

“It poked me in my cornea!”
