As you probably know, the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges has legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The decision effects 14 states that currently have gay-marriage bans in place.

Read Hugh Hefner’s take on the fight for gay marriage.

Speaking for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “Rising from the most basic human needs, marriage is essential to our most profound hopes and aspirations.”

In his descent, Chief Justice John Roberts urged gay-marriage supporters to celebrate their victory, but also told them to “not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”

Regardless of how you feel about the ruling (since you’re reading Playboy, you’re probably at least a little open-minded), the rapid shift in attitudes toward gay marriage in the United States is remarkable. Just over ten years ago, “George W. Bush rode to re-election on a campaign that promised a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.” Today, it is legal everywhere.

And to highlight the historic shift, Policy Mic put together this animated map which showcases how same-sex marriage has evolved in the United States over the past twenty years.
