Chalk one up for Science for once again 1) confirming what everyone already knew and 2) doing so in hilarious fashion.
A new study from researchers Jeffrey Kuznekoff at Miami University and Michael Kasumovic at the University of New South Wales tested players across 163 matches of Halo 3, and their results suggest the worse men are at the game, the more likely they are to make negative comments to female players of that game.
Yup, men who are also losing, or “losers,” are more likely to harass women online. You may pick your jaw up from the floor now.
Kasumovic said in the study that the results the researchers were seeing basically amounted to men fighting to maintain their status. “As men often rely on aggression to maintain their dominant social status,” he writes, “the increase in hostility towards a woman by lower-status males may be an attempt to disregard a female’s performance and suppress her disturbance on the hierarchy to retain their social rank.”
Men who suck still think they can pick on women to make themselves look and feel better, in other words. Nice to have some validation. Okay, so can Science now get to work on how to stop them? That’d be nice too.
