When you think about tequila, you think about Mexico. OK, you probably think about regrets and then you think about Mexico. But the spirit is so synonymous with its home country—and specifically the state of Jalisco, one of the best growing areas thanks to its unique red soil and high level of acidity, both of which help agave plants thrive—that it almost feels like sacrilege to sip a tequila that doesn’t hail from south of the border.

But if I told you there’s a new tequila that comes from Scotland, of all places, you know you’d have to try it. Because what’s that about?

While UWA Tequila bills itself as Scotland’s first premium tequila company, that’s something of a misnomer. Although UWA is based in Aberdeen, all of its Blue Weber agave indeed comes from Mexico, nurtured—as is standard—by jimadores, local farmers who can harvest up to four tons of agave per day. The twist comes during the aging process: UWA sources single-malt Scotch whisky casks a few miles from its headquarters and ships them all the way to Mexico, where the tequilas are then aged and bottled.

The brand is launching with a reposado aged for seven months in Speyside casks, with sweet caramel notes and a distinctively oaky finish and buttery texture, care of the whisky. There’s also a platinum blanco, which tastes more like a traditional tequila, with cooked agave notes and a subtle citrus flavor. UWA says a third release—a triple-distilled añejo that’s aged for 14 months, “like a single malt,” per a description—will follow early next year. It sounds a bit bizarre, but undeniably intriguing.

The distillery says its aim is to “create a profile of agave spirits unlike any other,” and seeing as how we’re talking about a friggin’ Scotch whisky cask tequila here, I think it’s accomplished its mission. Pre-order a bottle now.
