By now, you probably know that renowned Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán escaped from his high-security prison cell last weekend. But you might still be wondering how he manged to pull it off, especially considering there were cameras in his cell.
Well, perhaps this security footage will shed some light on the matter.
According to Gawker, the footage was released at a press conference held by Mexico’s National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido.
In the clip, you can see Guzmán—who currently has a $3.8 million bounty on his head—pacing in his cell, from the bed to the shower and back. At one point, he disappears behind the shower stall before emerging again. He walks back to his bed, appears to put on shoes, then returns to the shower and drops through what we now know was a two-by-two foot hole in the floor, gone for good.
In hind sight, I suppose the fact that he put on shoes before getting in the shower was a dead giveaway that something was up. Unless of course I’m just ignorant of Mexican culture, and showering with shoes on is a time-honored tradition south of the border.
Either way, Adiós, El Chapo!
