To celebrate Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked various celebrities to write love letters to the LGBTQ community, and many of them were happy to oblige. Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Elton John, Lea Michele, RuPaul and Sia, among others, shared messages of support.
In Selena Gomez’s letter, she talks about going to brunch with her mom and her mom’s gay friends as a kid, and how much it meant to her to grow up in such a supportive, non-judgmental family. She says, “I look forward to the day when a person is never judged, discriminated or feared for their sexuality.”
Britney Spears shared a handwritten note thanking her LGBTQ fans for all the support over the years. In the message, she says, “Your stories are what inspire me, bring me joy and make me and my sons strive to be better people.”
While plenty of women, both gay and straight, and several gay men wrote love letters for the campaign, there’s a noticeable lack of straight men involved. While it’s possible that Billboard just didn’t invite many straight men to participate, it’s also possible they turned down the opportunity because they feared being labeled as gay themselves if they voiced support for the LGBTQ community. C’mon, guys. It’s Pride Month! Show your gay friends some love.
