In true testament to someone who can do it all, Selena Gomez has announced her foray into a new role, stepping behind the camera, as an Executive Producer of a new Netflix Original Series titled 13 Reasons Why, which Gomez describes as a “passion project.”

A peek at a passion project I’ve been working on with @Netflix. @13ReasonsWhy arrives 3/31.

Airing exclusively on Netflix starting March 31, 2017, 13 Reasons Why is based off the #1 New York Times Bestselling Young Adult novel by author Jay Asher. The storyline follows a teenager named Clay Jensen (played by Dylan Minnette), who returns home from school to find an unexpected package of cassette tapes on his front porch. The tapes were recorded by his former classmate and romantic crush (Hannah, played by Katherine Langford) who tragically committed suicide just two weeks prior. Serving as a form of audio diary, the tapes detail the thirteen reasons why Hannah made her decision and how Clay, amongst others, factored into the equation as he struggles to understand and make sense of the tragedy.

Touting the words, “If you wanna know the truth, just press play,” each of the tapes will provide thoughts and explanations from Hannah.

She has nothing left to lose… but they do. Head to our IG story for answers. #13ReasonsWhy

Gomez pitched the project to Netflix, commemorating the meeting with a photo. She had saved this photo, which she just shared with her 108 Million Instagram followers, recollecting, “This was the day I was nervous as hell going into Netflix for the first time to talk about @13reasonswhy - my mom found this book in 2009 and worked her ass off to make it with me, guide me and tell this story authentically (the only reason, beside Jay this project was even made).”

Though primarily known for her work in front of the camera, Gomez has prior experience as an Executive Producer, having held similar roles on the 2016 TV series Rising and on the 2013 TV movie The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex, work as a Director in 2008 on *The Demi and Selena Show, and work as a writer on the 2014 video short, *Selena Gomez: The Heart Wants What it Wants.

Considering the magnitude of influence held by both Gomez and Netflix, we hope this series will also help encourage an anti-bullying dialogue amongst viewers.

Additional teasers are posted to the series’ Instagram, #13ReasonsWhy:
