After yesterday’s head-spinning news that Donald Trump voluntarily leaked classified intelligence to the Russians, the question we must ask ourselves is no longer “if” a new scandal will emerge, but “when?” And more specifically, will it break before Trump’s late night firing squad starts loading their weapons—er, taping their shows.

Unfortunately for the president, the Washington Post reported that Trump revealed classified information to high ranking Russian officials moments before Seth Meyers began taping his episode, which meant Meyers had just enough time to figure out what he wanted to say. As you can see in the clip below, Meyers was just as dumbfounded as the rest of us.

“We’re at a point now in the Trump presidency that feels very much like a pivotal moment for our democracy,” he said. “An increasingly authoritarian president relying on a small circle of loyalists abusing his power, and on top of that, just before we started taping, the Washington Post reported that Trump revealed classified information to Russian diplomats.”

Meyers then made a comparison that’s been on a lot of lips lately.

“He’s shameless Nixon,” Meyers said. “Nixon famously said, ‘I am not a crook.’ Trump’s basically saying, ‘I am a crook and there’s nothing you can do about it and, in fact, I’m having three scoops of ice cream.‘”

Meyers did his best to infuse some comedy into the proceedings by joking about the expressions on the faces of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during their meeting with Trump. But one couldn’t help get the sense that Meyers is starting to think that maybe this isn’t so funny anymore—that despite his ratings boom, he’d give it all up to see Trump get booted from office.

He’s not the only one.
