Is extramarital intercourse with a sex robot cheating? Personally, I’d say no, it isn’t, because robots are just advanced technology, not unlike sex toys, and therefore non-human. In my mind, sex with a robot is akin to masturbation. But, shit, I don’t know.

A new survey from the streaming United Kingdom network Now TV, which will soon introduce HBO’s humanoid drama Westworld to its lineup, looked into this question since it’s related to the series. For those unfamiliar, Westworld is sci-fi show where humans pay to have sex with robots that are indistinguishable from the human race. The show posits human-on-robot action to define the future’s sex-work industry.

People are divided on the topic. The survey revealed that 40 percent of respondents wouldn’t call sex with a robot cheating. That means the majority of people would. Meanwhile, one in three confessed they’d be down to bang a bot.

If public opinion is any indicator, things will only get stranger as technology evolves. Thirty-nine percent believe people will be engaging in full-on relationships with robots a mere 30 years from now. The same percentage confessed they’d be “horrified” if one of their friends made things official with an android. Of that number, 16 percent would demand their friend ditch the droid if things became too serious.

“Robotics and artificial intelligence is a long way off the technical sophistication of the theme park in Westworld, but we’re already seeing dolls being used in the adult entertainment industry and we can expect robots to join them soon,” Professor Noel Sharkey of Sheffield University told Daily Mail. "As a society, we need to start agreeing where the ethical boundaries are with the use of robots, so that as they are integrated into our daily lives in the coming decades we are ready.”

Sharkey makes a good point, as the adult industry is already making strides in the sex bot space. For instance, earlier this year, Spain opened the world’s first ever sex-doll brothel. Lumidolls offers four sex dolls that cost $115 to $160 per session. The bot brothel has become so successful that owners are currently seeking investors to open a second location.

What’s more, a popular sex doll in Vienna by the name of Fanny has motivated a second purchase at the Kontakthof brothel as she’s (it’s?) banking more cash than most of the real women working in the sex house. Perhaps they should consider a Marilyn Monroe look-alike. Douglas Hines, the engineer behind True Companion, a company that manufactures customized sex robots, mentioned that half of his customers want celebrity lookalikes and most requests are for Playboy’s first-ever cover girl.

Here’s the thing: cheating is a social construct and no one definition is universal. One person might deem dancing with a stranger worrisome while another is more concerned about what their partner is double-tapping on social media. Some even consider watching porn cheating. So before we reach a verdict, let’s look into why people want to have sex with a robot in the first place.

“For some, [it] is less about selfish indulgence and more about cutting the social anxiety that comes with sex with a real person. Didn’t shave or shower today? No problem if you’re doinking the doll!” Mal Harrison, a sexologist, recently told Glamour. “A second major reason people find them appealing is that they speak to the naughtiness factor. One of the four main elements of what turns on the human erotic mind is doing something taboo.”

Others, like Bryony Cole, host of the popular Future of Sex podcast, told the pub that instead of viewing the prospect of technosexuality as otherwordly, it could become a therapeutic tool for those with disabilities or past sexual traumas. She adds the prospect may also be an excellent tool for honing sexual skills.

But back to the central point. Matt McMullen, CEO and founder of Real Doll, says no, sex with a robot should not be considered cheating. “I would look at [sex with dolls] in the same way as any other sex aid or device,” he says. “Is using a vibrator or dildo or watching pornography considered cheating? Cheating entails another human being, in my opinion.”"He adds that his dolls are "a facsimile of a human-to-human relationship.”

Harrison agrees. She says most people are able to decipher between pleasure for pleasure’s sake and emotional intimacy. “I do believe some people will develop emotional attachments, though they won’t be anywhere nearly as deep or profound as what one can experience with another human,” she says. “The attachments also won’t have the ability to grow and flourish the way they would between two people.” If that were truly the case, however, Elon Musk wouldn’t be warning the world to cease AI development less it invites a war between andoids and humans. Because one day, robots will have feelings, too.
