Jersey City is gaining a reputation as a go-to town for street art, with its mayor invested and its museum populace interested. The latest addition is “The Jersey City Wave,” a new mural by Shepard Fairey.
Fairey is stoked on what’s happening artistically in a town oddly enough also known for its “Wall Street West” quality.
“A lot of my art is more political or social, so the way I’ve used waves frequently is to say, ‘Look at this, the beauty of nature. Look at this beautiful wave.’ But with this image, I actually approached the wave as more of a positive metaphor. For me, it was about this wave of, you know, a cultural renaissance that Jersey City seems to be riding right now.”
