Variety is reporting that Netflix is in talks with Matt Groening, the mastermind behind The Simpsons and Futurama, about producing a brand new animated series for the streaming-entertainment juggernaut.
Details are scarce, but it’s believed that Netflix would place an order for two seasons up front to reduce the amount of time and expense to get the show up and running.
Details of the project are being kept under wraps. Netflix is understood to be considering a two-season order of 10 episodes apiece. That could be prompted by the long lead time needed for animation production. A larger episode order upfront would allow Netflix to better amortize the production costs. It’s unclear if an outside production entity is involved with the project.
Now in its 27th season, The Simpsons has lasted for nearly 600 episodes and will continue into 2017 and possibly even further. America’s favorite cartoon family have reached iconic status, and it makes perfect sense for Netflix to want to establish that same type of success for their own enterprises.
