No-one can accuse the stars of HBO’s Silicon Valley of not staying true to their characters. In fact, it turns out that the men behind the show’s leading programmers even have a meet cute that is surprisingly worthy of their characters.
“We actually met playing video games!” Kumail Nanjiani told Vulture.
Thomas Middleditch rolled his eyes in mock disgust: “Shocker, it’s ‘on brand.’”
The game in question, it turns out, was Gears of War, but it turns out they bonded over more than just the opportunity to take on the Locust Horde together. (Given the timeframe that both Nanjiani and Middleditch offer for their meeting, it was the first Gears of War that they had to have been playing, for those anal enough to care.) Instead, it was a common bond that both shared by combining patience and the ability to comprehend social norms.
“It’s hard to find people who will play games for the length of time that we like to play for,” Middleditch said. “And then, on top of that, also have that person being a functioning element of society…”
The lesson is clear for anyone hoping to have a hit HBO show at some point in the late 2020s or early 2030s: get online and start gaming right now. How else will you meet your future partners in crime?
