When Solange was a teenager, she went through several phases, including one she refers to as “the Rasta-vegan-thrifter-who-is-determined-to-marry-Brandon-Boyd phase.” That’s from a letter the singer wrote to her adolescent self in Teen Vogue’s Music issue back in May. In the letter, she says, “take your time, baby girl. there’s no rush to get there. you will sow each of these chapters in the land that you become. you will see bits and pieces of them scattered into the skin you grow into. you don’t have to figure everything out now. time will reveal itself. i promise you.”

Now 31, Solange is still accomplishing the things she dreamed of as a teen. She is married to Alan Ferguson, a music video director, so she probably won’t be getting romantic with Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd anytime soon, but she was able to connect with him on a professional level. Here’s a clip of her joining Incubus onstage in New Orleans last week:

The song Solange sange with Boyd, “Aqueous Transmission, is the final track of the Incubus album Morning View, which came out in 2001. Solange turned 15 that year, so it’s totally possible that the album was released during her Brandon Boyd crush phase, and that she envisioned one day performing it with him. Twitter didn’t exist when back then, but teen Solange probably dreamed of appearing in photos like these:

Solange’s letter in Teen Vogue also talks about being called names like “crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo.” She tells her younger self that as an adult, she still gets called some of those things, but she has learned to embrace them. On Instagram this week, she has been sharing her all-time favorite photos of her self—including one from when she broke out in hives on her wedding day. Her younger self might not appreciate that one, but she’d probably be excited if she could get a peek at how beautiful and talented she grows up to be.
