Just when everyone thought Hollywood had discovered every idea for a movie, they pulled one more idea out of their hat: emoji. Earlier today, Sony Pictures Animation dealt out nearly seven figures to beat out Warner Bros. and Paramount for an animated movie centered around one of society’s favorite communication staples in social media. The new, untitled movie will be cowritten by Eric Siegel (Men at Work) and Anthony Leondis (Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters), with Leondis directing.

We can’t even begin to imagine how this movie will play out. We have a lot of questions like, will it feature every emoji? Can emojis walk? Is a crying emoji always crying? You get the point, we’re confused.

As of right now, story details are being kept under wraps. There’s another emoji pitch reportedly circulating Hollywood and, since emojis are public domain, Siegel and Leondis will have to work quickly to beat out others hoping to hop aboard the emoji train.

We are almost positive that the gentle clapping sound you hear is a nation of middle-aged people face-palming.
