A friend who grew up in Ireland once told me that on St. Patrick’s Day he went to church. But here in the U.S., we’ve turned it into a day drinking occasion masquerading as a cultural event, much like Cinco De Mayo. It’s a time to drink sweet, sweet Guinness and Jameson, which is just fine. But it’s also when you see sloshed men and women from all kinds of races, religions, and levels of inebriation slurring “Kiss me, I’m Irish.”
It doesn’t help that there’s a uniform associated with St. Patrick’s Day, or at least a color. Every office has that one annoying person in it who asks “Where’s your green? Where’s your green? It’s St. Patrick’s Day. Didn’t you wear green?” But from a sartorial standpoint, green isn’t always the easiest color to pull off if your name isn’t Bishop Don Magic Juan or Aaron Rodgers. So, to help save you from that nagging co-worker, we found five green styles that have you looking sharp and “festive”.
NIKE ROSHE DAYBREAK NM
Sneakers are a great way to sport a bolder color like green because you can use your pants and shirt to balance it out with more muted tones. The Daybreak was one of Nike’s earliest running sneakers when it debuted in 1979. It’s been brought back, but now it sits atop a comfortable Roshe sole that has been yellowed to give it a cool vintage look.
STANCE X DON C. SOCKS
If you want to rock some green and keep it discreet, socks are the way to go. Don C. of Just Don fame linked up with Stance to create these St. Paddy’s day socks that the Boston Celtics will wear in games. They’re performance socks, so they have plenty of padding and the tonal shamrocks keep them from being too over the top.
TODD SNYDER X CHAMPION REVERSE WEAVE SWEATSHIRT
There is a lot more to green then bright Kelly green. Olive green is a great color that is likely to pair well with lots of other clothes in your closet. This heavyweight sweatshirt from Todd Snyder and Champion uses the latter’s reverse weave construction and looks good whether you’re wearing it to the gym or the office.
ALPHA INDUSTRIES L-2B FLIGHT JACKET
If you want inspiration on how to look good in green, look no further than the military. Alpha Industries L-2B flight jacket was originally created in the 1950s. Neither too light nor too heavy, it’s an ideal layer for spring. It has a slim fit and contrasting sleeves for a more modern look.
EBBETS FIELD FLANNELS X J.CREW CIENFUEGOS ELEFANTES CAP
There are no shortage of modern sports teams that rock green in their uniforms, but Ebbets Field Flannels prefers to turn its eye toward the past and produce outstanding replicas for squads that no longer exist. This Cienfuegos Elefantes cap was originally worn by a baseball team in Cuba before the pro game was banned.
