Of all the things that could kill us in a hot second, including disease, bombs, guns, environmental catastrophe and cars, one that we’re not thinking about enough, according to mastermind physicist Stephen Hawking, is technology.

And how do we control technology as a threat to our very existence? With a world government, he says.

In an interview with The Times, Hawking simply said, “technology has advanced at such a pace that this aggression may destroy us all by nuclear or biological war. We need to control this inherited instinct by our logic and reason.”

As technology and artificial intelligence begin to understand how to survive, and they’re doing just that, it will turn to aggression as a useful tool in order to assure that it does, in fact, survive. Yes, we’re basically talking Skynet here.

Hawking suggests that a world government will be necessary to identify technological threats quickly. But then a world government could lead to tyranny, just another threat to our existence as humans. Sounds like a load of doom, but Mr. Hawking is optimistic about our chances.

“All this may sound a bit doom-laden but I am an optimist. I think the human race will rise to meet these challenges.”

So, a quick summary to brighten your upcoming weekend: We are, by most accounts, approaching what’s called the “technology singularity.” This hypothesis supposes that as artificial intelligence becomes truly sentient, an abrupt and runaway technology development period with result in “unfathomable changes to human civilization.”

One of those changes is technology as a potential threat to our own survival at the robotic hands of aggression.

So there you have it. Have a nice day!
