Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of the Glorious ‘Straight Outta Vagina’ Video:

If you’re wondering what Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin gossip about at night when they’re having sleepovers, it’s probably their hatred of the Russian punk band, Pussy Riot.

When Donald Trump assaults women, Pussy Riot assaults the status quo. After Trump’s boast about grabbing women by the pussy, the band released “Straight Outta Vagina.” The video depicts Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova as a priestess giving a young girl a candy vagina resembling an ecstasy pill that turns women’s pubic hair blue, making them stronger and even more kickass (if only that pill were available at CVS!). Throw in religious iconography, female dancers in men’s toilet stalls and inflatable ducks and you’ve got video that looks like Trump’s nightmare.

Apparently, they envisioned so much more. Producer Robert Healy (below right), whose Super Fun Productions is behind the video, tells Playboy exclusively, “There were thoughts of exploding police cars, burned-down football stadiums, talking vaginas, a stage play, a giant street parade through downtown Los Angeles, flying little girls, giant 20-foot rubber ducks, fires in apartment building windows that made a Pussy Riot sign, smoke bombs and a hundred other ostensibly clever slash awesome ideas that couldn’t happen for just as many reasons”.

Healy notes they wanted to ruffle people’s feathers the right way. “I think we had a pretty clear idea from the outset that we wanted this thing to work like a little conceptual Chinese finger-trap. That the more you were offended by the video, the more the thesis of the video would then prove itself to be valid”.

The beauty of Pussy Riot is their courage of undertaking personal risk to stand for what they believe in while blending in comedy and symbolism. Healy adds, “We are trying to show that humor and satire can be super effective tools for attacking these issues, for shining a light on them, and exposing the holes in both sides’ arguments.”

When Donald Trump talks about refusing to accept the election outcome and his unwillingness to compromise, a dark shadow is cast on our future. Healy describes his experience working with the director, Phillip Lopez, and Nadya Tolokonnikova. “When you go about creating any video, movie, show, etc., it by definition will turn out differently from what was originally intended. The key is to be open enough to accept and incorporate new stimuli and adjust quickly to unplanned roadblocks, all the while not losing sight of the ultimate objective at hand.” This exemplifies leadership this country needs.

Pussy Riot’s brand of feminism is more than a philosophy; it’s a spark for revolution. Healy adds, “Both the left and the right, men and women, need to generate a little more empathy and seriousness when engaging in these issues with each other. Trolling Twitter and YouTube and shouting at each other is not intellectual seriousness. A seven-year old can do that. In fact, that’s insulting to seven year olds. They know better”.

Pussy Riot knows better too. “Straight Outta Vagina” literally reminds ignorant men exactly where they came from. We can only hope ignorant people are listening.
