If there’s one thing most of us can agree on right now, it’s that 2016 has been a rough year. Even ignoring the political disasters and the humanitarian ones, this has been an especially brutal twelve months for celebrity deaths. As we stumble towards the end of the year, hopeful for a new beginning, Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan has offered up the ideal song, which has the most optimistic title anyone could hope for right now: “Happy New Year (Prince Can’t Die Again).”
The song, available on Bandcamp, was written and recorded on Christmas Eve and is described by McCaughan as being the result of “trying to look at any possible bright side of the coming new year after the disaster that was this one.” Put the emphasis on the word trying, considering that lyrics include “Next year might be better, but I don’t see any proof.”
Of course, considering that, since McCaughan wrote the song just three days ago, the world has also lost both George Michael and Carrie Fisher, such pessimism might be well placed. Surely 2017 couldn’t be any worse, right…? Right?
