For fans of streetwear, the day Supreme releases a new season’s collection is like a holiday. The die-hards are familiar with the routine. It starts when the physical and online stores close for a few weeks to get prepared (and let anticipation build). Then the preview of the the goods drops online on a Monday, followed by the brick-and-mortar locations re-opening that Thursday. Then a week later, also on a Thursday, the online store comes back online so the rest of the world that doesn’t live in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, or Japan has a chance to cop. For Supreme’s fall/winter 2016 that Thursday is today, August 25.
The online store historically gets updated at 11 am EDT and smart shoppers know to start clicking refresh around 10:58 (I’m giving away a lot of my personal secrets here) because Supreme’s app doesn’t send out a push notification until around 11:02 and in those 120 seconds, most of the inventory has already sold out. Is it all worth it, just to buy a jacket or a T-shirt? Yeah, kinda. There are few brands that consistently put out clothes that capture the zeitgeist the way that Supreme does. And the way that Supreme tiptoes between different genres while still remaining true to its core as a New York skateboard shop is pretty remarkable in an age where the cool label of the moment changes weekly.
So if you’re feeling up to the challenge and have quick trackpad fingers, we’ve combed through all the items in Supreme’s fall/winter collection to find the 10 must-buy pieces. All the items won’t drop on August 25, which means that if you come up empty today, you still get another crack at it next Thursday.
1. OLD ENGLISH VARSITY JACKET
It doesn’t matter if you didn’t get any playing time in high school, you should still rock a varsity jacket this fall. And Supreme’s is about as classic as it gets with a large old English “S” on the chest and the message “Supreme means ‘Highest” embroidered on the back.
2. S LOGO CREWNECK
With Supreme, there are the clothes that the hypebeasts and fuccbois go nuts over and then there’s the pieces that guys with genuine style gravitate toward. Supreme is dropping its famous box logo hoodie this season, but for my money, this crewneck sweatshirt with the more understated “S” logo is a better bet.
3. SHERPA FLEECE REVERSIBLE WORK VEST
No one wants to think about layering in late August, but this vest is guaranteed to be a go-to staple as the weather starts to cool. The fleece lining provides plenty of warmth and it is fully reversible with pockets on both sides so you can switch it up depending on your outfit.
4. STRIPED RUGBY
The rugby shirt is due for a comeback and leave it to Supreme to accelerate the process. The heavyweight cotton shirt is the perfect top to rock on the weekend (or anywhere really) and comes in five different colors with classic stripe patterns.
5. ASTRONAUT PUFFY JACKET
One of the more hyped pieces of the season, this puffy jacket features the famous image of an astronaut in space with the Supreme logo reflected in his helmet. It’s certainly a bold piece, but placing the image on the back and maintainging a solid on the front keeps it from being garish.
6. SIDELINE LONG-SLEEVE POLO
Akin to the rugby shirt, this long-sleeve polo shirt takes inspiration from vintage soccer jerseys, with a Supreme crest on the chest pocket. The placement of the Old English lettering near the hem rather than the shoulder on the back is a nice touch.
7. WAR REPORT TEE
Supreme has made a habit of celebrating 1990s-era New York City rappers from Mobb Deep to Dipset to the Wu-Tang Clan. This season sees Capone-N-Noreaga get some shine. The cover art from their debut album The War Report is on the back while their signatures adorn the back.
8. SUPREME X PLAYBOY LONG-SLEEVE FOOTBALL TOP
Playboy continues its longstanding relationship with Supreme with this shirt that is reminiscent of old football jerseys. The bright color blocking stands out from your other long-sleeve tees and it’s the perfect shirt to throw on for a game of two-hand touch.
9. SUPREME X TOM & JERRY WORK SHIRT
Remember when cartoon characters were a little bit more sinister? Supreme does, and is paying tribute to the classic Hanna-Barbera characters Tom and Jerry on this sturdier-than-it-needs-to-be work shirt.
10. SUPREME X SIMPSON BANDIT HELMET
Most people will probably buy this helmet to put on a shelf as an art piece, but you get extra props for wearing it while riding a motorcycle—it meets Department of Transportation and Snell2010 safety standards.
