This weekend Variety reported that the premiere episode of Syfy’s Z Nation had been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times in one day.

The premiere episode of “Z Nation” was devoured by approximately 300,000 unique IP addresses in the first 24 hours since its U.S. TV debut. While that may be far from record-holders like HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which saw over 1 million individuals illegally downloading its season 4 premiere, it’s also well in excess of other well-known series like Netflix hits “Orange is the New Black” or “House of Cards,” which attracted sub-six-figure sums.

The show’s popularity among internet freeloaders may come as a surprise to those of us who had absolutely no idea that such a television program even existed, much less that anyone else was clamoring to see it. If anything, the rush of illegal downloads may serve as a better campaign for the serial zombie adventure, which stars journeyman actors DJ Qualls and Harold Perrineau, than whatever Syfy did to promote it in the first place.
