We’ve reached the perhaps-inevitable point in cinema history in which it’s almost always blockbuster season. Blockbusters are in theaters right now, and they’ll keep arriving like clockwork until summer’s end. But they’ll also arrive in the fall, and even the winter, and definitely next spring. That means that while we’re busy watching the current crop of big-budget extravaganzas, studios are also trying to get our attention about the next crop, which brings us to the new official synopses released this week for two of 2016’s biggest films.
First, there’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the first ever big-screen meeting of DC Comics’ biggest heroes. So, what’s it about? Pretty much exactly what you’d expect.
Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
So, Batman and Superman start punching each other, something bigger comes along, and then they go and punch that and become superbros. Also Justice.
Then, there’s Independence Day 2, the Will Smith-less sequel to a two decades-old sci-fi epic that, like the alien hordes, is coming whether you want it to or not.
After “Independence Day” redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
So, this synopsis tells us how the film will build on the human interactions with alien tech we saw in the first flick, but what it doesn’t tell us is which computer virus Jeff Goldblum will upload to save us this time.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters March 25, 2016. Independence Day 2 lands June 24, 2016.
