If That thing You Do! didn’t put a smile on your face at least once, there’s a good chance you’re not getting enough fun out of life. Tom Hanks’ directrial debut – an ode to the Technicolor ‘60s about a Pennsylvania band reaching stardom on the strength of a single hit song – has become a basic cable staple in the 20 years since its release. That means most everyone has seen it by now and that means most everyone has had the title song stuck in their heads before.
Last night, the earworm infected the world again when three of the film’s stars – Tom Everett Scott, Ethan Embry and Johnathon Schaech – reunited onstage at The Roxy for a performance as The Wonders (formerly “The Oneders”). Comedian and Goddamn Comedy Jam host Josh Adam Meyers put the reunion together and got to play rock star as lead vocalist. Notably absent was Steve Zahn, who played smartass lead guitarist Lenny. Thankfully, a dude in a Lenny mask subbed in for him.
Unfortunately, this is not likely to launch The Wonders national tour so many fans want deep down in their hearts. There is video of the full performance, though, so we have that. Note that Scott still knows how to rock a pair of shades and Embry has not forgotten his perfect goofy-as-hell T.B. Player grin.
Now they just need to meet up with Zahn and recreate “Dance With Me Tonight.”
