Lately Robert Smith and his not-so-merry band of men have seemed slightly aimless, as evidenced by the Cure’s turgid self-titled release in 2004 and the prolonged wait for their latest, 4:13 Dream. (The title notes this is the group’s 13th record and that the band is currently a quartet; the oft-delayed release, too, was cut down from a double album to a more manageable—you guessed it—13 songs.) The streamlining works, as 4:13 Dream returns to the more eclectic sounds of the band’s mid-1980s/early-1990s mainstream breakthroughs Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Wish and, slightly less flatteringly, Wild Mood Swings. Tracks like “Sirensong,” “The Hungry Ghost,” “Underneath the Stars” and “The Perfect Boy” are just shy of arena-ready Cure material, while “Switch” and “It’s Over” show the group isn’t above making a little noise and having fun when the mood strikes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mar 21, 2010
