If you’re a fan of the classic Bond films, the mere title of the upcoming 24th 007 adventure, Spectre, sent chills down your spine the first time you heard it. It’s the revival of the evil organization that everyone’s favorite superspy has been battling ever since the Sean Connery days. That, plus the fact that it’s following the triumph of Skyfall, means high expectations, and now the first Spectre trailer is here to show us what the franchise is aiming for.
Sadly, we don’t get any Bond action, but we do get some spectacularly atmospheric buildup. Bond (Daniel Craig in his fourth time out) has a secret, you see, and the secret leads him into a haunted world of shadows, secrets, and a guy who warns him he’s “a kite dancing in a hurricane.” The ruins of the old MI6 building are contrasted with the ornate dwelling of a villain we don’t yet see (though we know the voice: Christoph Waltz), the outdoor visuals double down on the bleakness of Skyfall, Craig has the steely stare of a hunter both fascinated by and wary of his prey, and of course, a ring with a certain tentacled logo is revealed, setting the stage for a confrontation that fans have been waiting decades for: Bond and SPECTRE, together again.
Spectre features returning cast members Ralph Fiennes as M, Ben Whishaw as Q, and Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, along with new cast members Lea Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, and Dave Bautista. It hits theaters November 6.
