The Five Spot: Entertainment to Put in Your Brain This Week

Guess what? All the fireworks this past weekend somehow transported us all back to the Swinging Sixties! The Stones are on the radio, the Minions are trying to steal the British crown, Masters and Johnson have just blown everyone’s minds, and Archie Andrews is… well, still hanging out in the Chocklit Shoppe. He’s been there for a while.

ARCHIE #1
74 years after he first appeared, Archie Andrews is getting a reboot. The relaunched, overhauled comic book starring America’s oldest teenager and his Riverdale pals sounds promising: Mark Waid (of Daredevil, Princess Leia, etc.) is writing the new series, and the first three issues will be drawn by Saga artist Fiona Staples. (July 8)

MINIONS
The prequel to Despicable Me follows the history of the sidekicks who were the funniest part of the earlier films, focusing on an adventure in the swinging London of 1968. Sandra Bullock voices the villainous Scarlet Overkill; Pierre Coffin, who’s co-directed all of the movies so far, plays all of the little yellow guys too. (July 10)

THE ROLLING STONES, “I CAN’T GET NO SATISFACTION”
The most famous riff in rock hit #1 in America on July 10, 1965, and that date’s 50th anniversary is being commemorated with a 12-inch vinyl reissue. Alternately, you could celebrate by listening to the covers by Cat Power or the Residents or Devo or Otis Redding or Guitar Wolf or the Supremes or Television or… (July 10)

WARNER BROS. SDCC 2015 MOVIE PANEL
DC’s got a ton of superhero movies due in the next few years, and there will doubtless be a flood of footage and announcements after this Saturday panel: Batman v. Superman clips? Suicide Squad stuff? Confirmation of who’s playing Green Lantern in Justice League? An All-Star Section 8 TV show? (Maybe not that last one.) (July 11)

MASTERS OF SEX
The third season of Showtime’s series about sexologists William Masters and Virginia Johnson jumps forward to 1966, when their study Human Sexual Response made waves. And something interesting’s going on between Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) and Libby Masters (Caitlin FitzGerald)… The first episode airs Sunday, but it’s already up online. (July 12)
