The Five Spot: Entertainment to Put in Your Brain This Week: The Transporter Refueled

The Transporter Refueled

It’s a week full of old kinds of heroes and new kinds of heroines. Hideo Kojima’s Punished “Venom” Snake returns to the small screen and the Transporter is back on the big one; meanwhile, Purity “Pip” Tyler is the literary-fiction protagonist of the moment, Squirrel Girl is eating nuts and kicking butts, and Laura Jane Grace is rocking hard.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN
There’s an argument to be made that Metal Gear Solid auteur Hideo Kojima is one of the preeminent creative minds of the moment. Last year’s mini-game Ground Zeroes leads into Kojima’s masterpiece (and, reportedly, his final MGS): a gigantic open-world military espionage scenario that opens with an hour-and-a-half-long prologue, a.k.a. the Mother of All Cut-Scenes. JONATHAN FRANZEN: PURITY
Franzen’s fiction has always aimed high, and his new novel shoots for the stars: when you name a protagonist “Pip,” you’re directly inviting comparisons to Charles Dickens. The plot appears to revolve around a Wikileaks-like group called The Sunlight Project; the themes include political activism, parents and children, and, well, look at the title. (September 1)

squirrel girl vs galactus

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL, VOL. 1: SQUIRREL POWER
Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s consistently hilarious comics series concerns a cheerful teenage superheroine (with “the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel”) who prefers nonviolent solutions but can kick anyone’s ass. Iconic image: Squirrel Girl taking a selfie atop the fallen Galactus on the moon, saying “well, gosh, that wasn’t so hard after all!” (September 1)

THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED
Désolé! Jason Statham doesn’t appear in this film, the first of a planned trilogy of prequels to the 2002-2008 action-flick series. (Ed Skrein takes over the role of Frank Martin instead.) Hourah! Luc Besson, who masterminded the earlier movies, is writing and producing these too; the cast also includes Ray Stevenson (as Frank’s dad) and former Miss World Yu Wenxia. (September 4)

AGAINST ME!: 23 LIVE SEX ACTS
Last year’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues transformed a pretty good punk band into a worldbeating ball of fury, fronted by the inimitable Laura Jane Grace: “six-foot-two, in heels, fucking screaming into someone’s face.” This live album documents the ensuing tour — see the video of “True Trans Soul Rebel” above for a taste of what the band’s like on stage.
