For decades, Star Wars fans have known to let the wookiee win. Now, a deleted scene from 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens demonstrates why.
The sight of Chewbacca ripping an arm off Unkar Plutt, the trader in charge of Rey’s food supply on the planet Jakku, might seem a little extreme at first glance, even in its unfinished form. But it is at least thematically consistent with a franchise where limbs are regularly sacrificed for the good of the galaxy: Obi-Wan Kenobi cuts off an arm in the first movie, Luke Skywalker loses a hand in the second and Anakin Skywalker lost all kinds of limbs in 2005’s Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
The footage was first released on the 3D Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray of JJ Abrams’ revival of the sci-fi franchise last year, but made its way online this weekend via some enterprising fans. If nothing else, at least audiences who couldn’t afford that version of the movie now know just why Chewbacca isn’t exactly the cute fuzzball that people sometimes imagine him to be. In case his whole laser crossbow, shooting-lots-of-guys thing wasn’t enough of a clue.
