The Australian television series The Slap, based on Christos Tsiolkas’ award-winning novel, featured two actors who, while not technically American, are well known to U.S. audiences: Melissa George (30 Days of Night, The Good Wife) and Sophie Okonedo (Dirty Pretty Things, Æon Flux). This, in addition to the fact that Australian is not an incomprehensible accent to American ears, leads me to wonder why an American version is being made at all. Nevertheless, that is what is happening.
American adaptations occasionally turn out well (The Office). Often times, they crush the soul (Prime Suspect). Rather than take that chance — and since the original The Slap has just been made available on Netflix — I’m going to go ahead and watch this critically-acclaimed television program about the repercussions of a nasty bit of public violence just as it was intended, funny accents and all. I’d suggest you do the same.
